DRC: an increase in oil production to overcome the
crisis?
Kinshasa DRC
After adopting a project in April 2022 to increase state revenues, Kinshasa will launch an international call for
tenders for foreign investors in a few days. The government wants to operate 19 oil and gas exploration blocks.
The implementation of this program is governed by the oil code adopted in 2015 by the DRC. According to Didier
Budimbu, the Congolese Minister of Hydrocarbons "the objective is to become one of the hydrocarbon giants in
Africa and I think we will achieve it because the potential is there, at all levels."
While the extractive industry is a major contributor to government revenues and growth, the current global
context lends itself largely to increasing oil production. The country has particularly ambitious goals: to increase
production from 22,000 barrels per day to 200,000 barrels per day.
While in theory the project should benefit the country's economic development, voices are already being raised
in civic society fearing the impact that such a policy will have on the forests of the Congo Basin.
