Renewable Energy consumption is rising

                                                                                     Renewable energy , illustrative image

Global energy consumption has fallen during the early stages of the Covid-19 pandemic. All but one major
category of energy production declined. Despite the largest decline in global primary energy consumption since
World War II, global renewable energy consumption increased by 9.7% in 2020. This is a significant result given
the impact of the pandemic on total energy demand.
Energy trends in all categories rebounded in 2021. But renewables once again led the way. From 2020 to 2021,
global renewable energy consumption grew an impressive 15%.
             Global renewable energy consump-
tion has grown exponentially at an
average annual rate of 12.6%, over
             the past decade. Renewable energy
is the only energy category that has
             experienced double-digit global
growth over the past year and
             decade.
As an example, in 2010, the world
             consumed 10.5 exajoules of rene-
wable energy. By 2021, that number
has grown to 39.9 exajoules. The
             increase in renewable energy con-
sumption in 2021 is a record for a
single year and a new all-time high
             for renewable energy consumption
             over a year (5.1 exajoule).
