Hydropower, which is presented as a separate
category, is growing overall at a much slower rate
than modern renewables such as solar. Global
hydropower consumption in 2021 was 40.3 exajoules,
which is still more than wind and solar. However, the
10-year average annual growth rate of hydropower is
much lower, at only 1.5%.
Globally, hydropower accounted for 6.8% of global
primary energy consumption in 2021, just slightly
more than the 6.7% of renewables like wind and
solar. But wind and solar power will finally overtake
hydropower in global consumption this year.
Wind (49.0%) and solar (27.2%) are the most
consumed energies within the renewables category.
Although wind power consumption maintains a good
lead over solar power consumption, the ten-year
growth rate of solar power consumption continues to
be more than twice the growth rate of wind power as
more investments are being made and countries are
considering this energy source.
Shanghai in China, China is the first consumer of renewable energy
There is no surprise that China is the world's largest
consumer of renewable energy. Its growth rate over
the past decade also far exceeds all other members
of the Top 10. In total, the top 10 consumers
accounted for almost 80 percent of global renewable
energy consumption in 2021.
However, the challenge faced by the World remains
the increased global energy demand to 31.3 exajoules
in 2021. The yearly average of 5 exajoules increase in
renewable energy consumption, represents only one
sixth of the global energy demand. Thus, it will take
more than a decade before renewable energy growth
can match global energy demand growth.
